I hinted a while back about writing a post about finding the situation with site’s and their use of certain tags when giving links to other site’s.. namely what we describe as backlinks..
For example, If I submit an article to EzineArticles… the links in my bio box at the end of my article would be considered backlinks to the site I am using for that article..
Now it’s not really easy to see if a site has FOLLOW or NOFOLLOW tags, and whilst it isn’t a major issue, it does need some of your thought, the link power of incoming links from places like Ezine can be huge if the links are FOLLOW (which they are btw), but if they are NOFOLLOW.. you may not be spending your time very wisely..
I have to say that properly placed articles, can be good for MUCH more than backlinks and are great traffic generation tools, but I figured we’d discuss the backlink element of submitting your content to other property and platforms…
I will show in the pictures below, how to get a look behind the pages of a site and check what’s going on under the hood so to speak…
The first picture shows you how to get the source code visible, which is where you will find the HTML construction of a page, it is non intrusive and you are not able to meddle or alter anything, it’s purely for your eyes, not your hands!.. I have highlighted in red the bits you wanna see:
Now.. as you can see, your starting point should be to go into the view button on your browser.. and then from there, you can click the Page Source text, this will bring up the page source code, this will be, as I stated earlier.. the source code of the page you are currently viewing, so be sure you are on the correct page..
It will look something like this to begin with:
From here, you can see pretty much all the construction of a page…
And then you do a nifty little trick that is available on most browsers…
and that is click and hold down CTRL + f - This brings up the find feature at the bottom of the source code page like so:
The reason for doing this is that it allows you to type in the specific words/text that you are looking for, in this instance being FOLLOW or NOFOLLOW..
So in the find box highlighted above, you are able to insert whatever you are looking for, and it will become highlighted by the find function, instead of you having to struggle through reading what could be a HUGE page of HTML construction source code…
it is important to note that sometimes, they are referred to as DOFOLLOW and NOFOLLOW, instead of simply FOLLOW.. so be aware of what you are looking for…
Using this, allows you to see what is offered in terms of backlinks from a page.. and whilst I wouldn’t dismiss a page for this, it is still extremely good to know..
Hope this helps a little….

Hey, that does help a bit. I will practice that. Tried looking at your site and found instances of both, so I might need to go back and read what it was saying. I’ll probably need to check a post that isn’t specifically talking about “follow” and “nofollow” as well
Hi Nate…
You will find instances of both here… some of my site is NOFOLLOW.. but I have a plugin for my wordpress that has comments as FOLLOW…
Hope it helps a little and I may cover it more in a newsletter soon
