Ask Jamie: Trash A Campaign

By Jamie Holt | July 7, 2008 .

Hey there folks… it appears that the majority of my messages come from those members on my list who wish to remain anonymous.. which is totally cool and the next one is something that I really feel is the difference between seeing success and consistently failing with projects..

So, without anymore here today’s question:

Jamie, when working your I.M. business, at what point with a campaign do you think.. ahh this is crap, let’s drop it?.. at what point do you trash a campaign and look into another one instead of wasting your time?…. I never know when to drop a bad campaign..or if a campaign is even bad at all.

I can totally relate with the above from my early days and would like to offer my perspective, although it may not be the only or correct way..I know it works for me…

I said:   Nice question dude!!..

You see the thing is, first off we have to establish what type of a campaign we are talking about, the differnce between dropping a PPC campaign and a free methods campaign is like a vast ocean fo difference..

But, as I know you are using predominantly free methods, I will answer for that and maybe cover my PPC answer later…

I always aim for an acceptable level of traffic to gauge the results in a niche… for example… first I like to see how much traffic it takes to get a conversion.. like 1:20  or  1:50  or  1:200 etc etc..

BUT… this isn’t as clear cut as it seems, because after this we also need to see if we can generate enough traffic from a niche for it to be worthy of time and also we need to be sure that we are driving good traffic that gives a result that can be used in testing for conversions. Choosing the right keywords to target is a variable.. your keywords could be out of sync with your final goal.

There are soooooo many different possible options here, so we need to do tow things..

a) Ensure we have the fundamentals of keyword targeting in place right from the start

b) Drive enough traffic to your monetization method to gauge firstly the conversion rate and then secondly the amount of traffic possible to make sure the market is hungry enough for us to justify time spent on a niche.

If you follow these two and begin to see results then continue testing and tweaking as necessary…

If you get this far and aren’t seeing conversions or are seeing limited..then drop it and move on.

Fail fast and move on!
