Ask Jamie: Do you Focus More On Traffic Or On Your Website?

By Jamie Holt | September 14, 2008 .

A quick question out of the bag today:

Hey there Jamie.. thanks for the earlier report. really got me focused and ready to go. although some of the terminology escapes me I am sure to pick it up soon, what I wanted to ask you was this. Do you focus more on generating traffic or on making your website(s) right and ready to make sales?. I always worry about how my websites look and feel.

My reply was:

Hey Georgie.. how are you?

I have to be honest here and tell you to STOP worrying about the look and feel of your website and start focusing on your traffic, whilst it is important to have your website structured properly.. you will never know how effective your current setup is if you don’t have traffic passing through it and working for your sales. As much as internet marketing is about testing and making sure your pages convert.. you can’t do that if you don’t know how the potential customers in your niche are reacting to it.

Using actual stats and figures is the only way you will come to know what is working and what isn’t. Bounce rates, visitor paths, keywords etc all have a bearing on how you are going to amend your site, but what is more important is getting people there and testing how it performs when it is under scrutiny by visitors.

Get driving that traffic and adjust as you work along.. there is nothing better than human reaction to show you where you are going wrong and what you need to twist or tweak.
